Oh, those relationships! On the one hand, you are so happy and giggling, on the other, you want to grab the closest object and target the head of our significant other. But how is it even possible to go from perfection to something so soul-destroying? Well, don’t worry at all. We are here to teach you all about the 5 stages of a relationship, so you can figure out where you stand, what we are doing, and mainly what comes after! So let’s get started.
Euphoria Stage
You have met the perfect guy. No matter what he is doing and saying, he is exactly who and where he needs to be. But you’re still looking for a fault, something to tell you there is no way he is so fantastic, yet you can’t find anything. And the best part? It looks like he is feeling the same thing as you. He knows how it’s going.
You are finishing each other’s sentences, when you look at each other it seems like the world doesn’t exist anymore, and you have all those amazing feelings that make you feel like you’re floating on air with little cartoon hearts fluttering above your head. But you keep wondering: “What comes after that?” Well, welcome to stage 2.
The Sexual Tension
All of a sudden, you’ve gone from being a woman who has her shit together even while doing 300 things at once, to constantly thinking about the next time you’ll be alone with him. Your thoughts are all about how good you two are in bed and what’s going to happen next, , and so the countdown starts until you can get back together again and start bothering your neighbors. The texts you exchange are about how much fun you are having, how it is even possible to have so much fun, and how much is left until you see each other again.
The Love
He says it first, you say it first, it doesn’t matter. Somehow the click happened and you already know he is the perfect man for you. You’ve already started thinking about what color your wedding dress will be or how nice it is that you have his keys and he has yours or what a great fit you are now that you’re living together.
The conversations about your future have already begun and you both find yourselves dreaming of beaches and sunsets with your kids playing carefree in the background of your dream house. Everything runs smoothly. For the first six months at least. And then?
The Reality
Oh, what about her? We were fine at the beach! Slowly the daily and fascinating sex becomes weekly or just not that fascinating any more. Other than sex though, suddenly you are taking off the rose-tinted glasses and realizing that the perfect man of the first stage isn’t quite so perfect. In fact, he’s like a babushka – as you open it, more and more things are revealed and more and more things prove annoying. But what is happening? Where have all these promises gone? Who is this man anyway?
So now you have a choice. You either go to stage 5 or stay at stage 4 and do your best to make it as good as you can. How will this happen?
With Conversation. With Understanding. With Love.
Like it or not, this is where you need to try your best and open your eyes widely to see if you do need this man in your life. If the answer is yes, then roll up your sleeves and prepare to do the necessary work. If not, then you need to go to stage 5. Are you ready to hear this?
The Nuclear Explosion
When it’s all going wrong, you may be tempted to ask questions like: “why are you not doing this?” or “why are you not more like him?” But there’s really no point getting angry and being hurtful. You don’t need a specific explanation. Things simply aren’t working out and that’s ok.
So girls, don’t get to stage 5. Instead, there’s a way to play with the first 4 stages of the relationship over and over again. To do this, you need to avoid looking at your relationship through rose-tinted glasses in the first place and do your best to face the reality of the situation, rather than just overlooking the bad parts.
Don’t make the mistake of falling in love with the idea of the relationship, because then stage 5 will always follow stage 4. Fall in love with the person for all that they are and learn to accept the parts that aren’t so great too, and then you’ll never have to reach stage 5.
